Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired…Part 1 Ginger

When I was pregnant with my little sweet pea, I was VERY SICK. The term “Morning Sickness” did not do it justice, as I was sick all day, every day for 9 months. As a result, my digestive system and my immune system have taken a beating. I went from the girl who never got sick, to the girl who never was well.

I had finally had enough around Thanksgiving time and began to really take a hard look at my diet and ways to boost my immune system.  Simply put, I became sick and tired of being sick and tired.  I plan to share with you all the things I have done to change my diet and boost my immune system in hopes that your family can also benefit from it!

As you read last week, my first change was to add Vitamins to our Smoothies. One “vitamin” that I found to add was Ginger. This was because in all my research, Ginger kept coming up and I soon realized that I had stumbled upon a super-food of sorts. Here is what I found:

The benefits of Ginger are enormous! Here is the cliff-note version of all the benefits of Ginger:

  • Boosts your Immune system
  • settles an upset stomach
  • cures motion sickness, especially sea-sickness.
  • relief of or reducing the severity of morning sickness in pregnancy (and completely safe for baby)
  • anti-inflammatory- reduction in pain levels and increased mobility for those suffering from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cancer Prevention and completely zaps ovarian cancer cells. There is a TON of very exciting research being done right now with ginger and cancer.

The best part is that Ginger is so concentrated, you don’t have to use very much to receive its beneficial effects. In fact, just by adding a ½ inch sliver to your smoothie every day will meet the recommended requirements.  This strange, finger-like root can be found in your produce department of any grocery store and does not cost very much.  It takes me 3 weeks to use up one ginger root and I use it every morning for 3 people.

So as one of my first diet changes, I simply began adding a sliver of ginger to our smoothies. It not only tastes good, but it’s simple and easy. So try adding a piece to your favorite smoothie, or check back all week for some ginger smoothie recipes that my family loves!

Do you use Ginger in your smoothies?  I would love to hear your recipes!!
